I always wondered who won the Blue Ribbon after Pabst.

Punching William Willett in the Face

The question I have today is should I punch William Willett in the face now or should I wait an hour? Just because he had to cut his golf game short by an hour, I have to suffer a century later by setting my clocks back and waking up in darkness. To make matters worse, the "The Man" has decided that we need to do so even earlier in the year.

Why? Because turning on my lights an hour later in the evening is supposed to conserve energy? Let me tell you how this concept plays out. I get up. It's dark. I turn on lights. The sun rises and I forget to turn off said lights. They stay on all day until I go to bed.

Not only is it a dumb idea, which a recent study supports, but it calls into question why I'm doing this DST dance at all.

I rarely agree with Arizona, but they definitely have an interesting idea in not subscribing to Daylight Savings Time. According to the above map (blue do DST/orange used to do DST/red have never done DST), there are quite a few places that used to have DST and have reverted back. Sometimes it's best to just admit something was a bad idea and take the short-term, global embarrassment of being wrong. Congress, I'm looking in your direction.

Thanks a lot, Willett. Now I have to wait three weeks for my TiVo to tell me that "Gilmore Girls" is on at 8:00 instead of 7:00.

My Folgers Moment

It was a year ago I began the Quest for the Perfect Cup of coffee. The journey is complete and now every morning feels like an 80s Folgers commercial.

With an exaggerated stretching motion, I wake up and start grinding some Stumptown Hairbender coffee. After intaking a big whiff of the ground goodness as if I was smelling the essence of Heaven itself, I start the coffee percolating. Then, embracing my cup of java with two hands, I take a deep breath, and gaze off at the Maxfield Parrish-like sunrise. The world is a beautiful place.

But seriously every morning this week I've actually been excited to get that first sip of coffee. It really IS the best part of waking up.

At least my life isn't imitating the early Folgers commercials. I think I'd get my fresh-brewed cup of coffee splashed in my still-waking-up face.
